The week had all kinds of interesting video projects, from installations and performances to experimental and documentary videos, and was organized by students of the institution.

At the school's gallery, Marginalia presented a simple installation-like version of its popular software Chronotopic Anamorphosis, made about a year ago, in 2008, soon becoming a hit at Vimeo, through its demo video. For this exhibition, the software was adapted to Open Frameworks libraries, gaining faster video processing through the advantages of C++ language. With a webcam enabled computer and a projector, the public there could interact with the system in real time and distort themselves in the projected image.

Thanks, Nairza, for the invitation and everyone else that worked hard at the school to make it happen.

marginalia beyond the andes: Interactivos? I enrolled myself as a collaborator for the project Frame Seductions, by artist Pierre Proske [Australia] and, departing to Lima, I integrated the collaborator team of the project, in which also figured Federico Andrade [Argentina - Modular colective], and Billie Pate [USA].

in Frame Seductions, we developed an audiovisual interactive piece in which portions of a panoramic video were shown accordingly with the relative position of the visitor in front of the screen. therefore, the visitors movements in the space modified the section of the image that was seen, allowing to see beyond the framing of the image - at least virtually, because, eventhough there was image beyond the edges of the screen, it wasn't infinte, and had also its framing. curiously, eventhough Pierre didn't know it in advance when he idealized the project, the relation between the spectator and the image is precisely the one seeked - without success, by the character from Les Carabiniers, film by Godard, in his first cinema screening [check out in a previous post marginalia 0.2 - cinematographic appropriations].

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; the visible and the invisible. and, in the case of cinema, the out-of-field, has also a 'unstablizing' role of the filmed scene, being one of the most importante element in the ellipsis of movie grammar and in the creation of suspense - as in the classic Rear Window, by Alfred Hitchcock.

in the conception and execution of Frame Seductions, we tryed to work conceptually those aspects through a tension play among the field and the out-of-field which was opperated in the moment of interaction. in our discussions, we understood that the mobility of the framing doesn't implicate the extinction of those tensions, but rather their increase. it was in this sense that we worked on the images and on the responses of the system to the visitor's participation.

my practical role in the project's development was related to video production and processing, studying different techniques to the creation of panoramic videos, as well as different compression settings that would allow the rapid processing by the system. the programming was done by Pierre, using the openFrameworks libraries and algorithms for face detection and tracking. on the course of the process, I could also work on the conception and the system for a modularity of the video image, by spliting it into sections that could be swapped while the espectator wasn't looking to that part. this way, the out-of-field image became less stable, creating some interesting surprises in the course of interaction [more info about the project at the workshop's wiki].

Test of a panoramic video technique based on slit scanning.

Test of panoramic video technique with three takes done with a single camera.

at the end of the workshop, I also had the opportunity to briefly collaborate with Masa project, by Andrea Sosa [Argentina] and Rolando Sánchez [Peru], giving some consultancy on compression, resolution and other technical video matters.

as a parallel activity of the workshop, I also participated of Lima's Pecha Kucha Night, together with the other collaborators. Pecha Kucha is a kind of project presentation evening in which each presenter must use 20 slides which are programmed to last exactly 20 seconds each, totalizing a 6min 40sec duration. trying to work directly with the limitations imposed, my presentation was titled "0.05 fps" and I showed some images of my video "Paik for Kids" while talked a little about my motivations to work with audiovisual and new media. the response of everyone there was really good, and my presentation ended up in the Pecha Kucha Daily site, of the international Pecha Kucha community.

paticipating of the workshop in Lima was an incredible learning, collaboration and research experience. it really created a perfect environment for collective experimenting and I hope to have the opportunity to participate in other editions of the event. it was also great to meet the other participants - people with interests so close to ours, from other parts of the world, in special Latin America. many of the people there heard me saying some times how we - latinamericans [and particularly Brazilians!] know so little of what happens around us and for that we miss great opportunities of working together with our continent neighbors. I hope that the contact stablished with people from Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Mexico can become partnerships and collective projects in a close future.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://marginalia-project.blogspot.com/2009/05/marginalia-beyond-andes-interactivos.html' title='marginalia beyond the andes: Interactivos? as soon as we have it done we will release both the source code and the software.

-

for these experiments we used raw footage of the feature film 'os residentes' [yet to be released], by tiago mata machado. actress simone sales brushing her hair violently.

marginalia goes to AEurásia

<img style="cursor: pointer; Sketching a brief description:

"The video-installation AEurasia presents a trip around the world inside of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Specific locations where selected in the city based on the correspondence existing between their names and diverse chosen locations of the world. The diagram resulting of the connection of the points representing each elected spot is a map tracing the world inside a city. Four main concepts shall conduce the spectator's experience: difference, distance, time and mobility. A stimulus to acquire better knowledge of the city we inhabit."

Seven videos are presented to the spectators sketching objective and subjective relationships between corresponding places, one of which is a distant city while the other is a location in Belo Horizonte. An eighth projection summarizing the whole installation responds to actions of the spectator, capturing his image in real-time and placing him in the video he watches by cropping only his body from the surroundings [this procedure is mediated by a software we call AESoulCaptor which is basically responsible for doing a real time Chroma Key]. By doing so, the spectator is merged to a distant location as if he had visited it: while he can enjoy interacting in real-time with all the locations, a postcard is produced as a souvenir of his 'traveling' experience inside AEurasia, this imaginary continent.

The spectator can, then, retrieve his souvenir when leaving the installation using a terminal running the software we call AECheck-in which is responsible for presenting every image produced that day in order for the spectator to choose his favorite photo which can then be sent to himself or others by e-mail and uploaded to AEurasia's Flickr.

Among the many softwares developed by Marginalia for this project, two main applications are of greater importance: AESoulCaptor and AECheck-in, developed, respectively, on C++ using the open source library openframeworks and Processing 1.0.1.

This project represents the first attempt of Marginalia Project on working with the library openframeworks for C++ and AppleScript with outstanding results so far; Processing has been employed in order to develop a user-friendly interface, which is the first attempt of Marginalia Project on developing this sort of programming practices [interface-based softwares]. These new fields of work are of major importance from now on, since Marginalia will be developing the projects to come [soon to be announced] mainly on openframeworks and taking advantage of Apple features such as AppleScript, Quartz Composer and Automator.

AETeletransporter is a system working simultaneously on two connected terminals composed of the following softwares: AESoulCaptor [openframeworks], AECheck-in [Processing], AESender [AppleScript], AEConnect[AppleScript]. In addition to the development of the already mentioned system, Marginalia Project worked on the making of the videos and documentation of the installation.

More information on the new projects of Marginalia will be given on the following posts which are intended to briefly cover present and future projects of the group.

<img style="cursor: pointer; With a better structure than previous tests, the presentation came out pretty well, with an interesting observation of the positive response from the public.

The festival's organization also made available, at the ceremony, a preview of the festival's e-book, containing information about the projects and texts written by the festival's comission and jury. We highlight a text written by José Cabral Filho, professor of the Architecture School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, who wrote specifically about marginalia, and whose text we wish to soon make available at this blog.

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; In this video it's demonstrated a software developed by André Mintz as a programming exercise.

The objective was to transpose to Processing programming environment [www.processing.org] to real time exibition, the effect created by Zbigniew Rybczynski in his movie "The Fourth Dimension", of 1988. The video image is fragmented into horizontal lines and then lines from different frames [different times] are combined in a same moment in the display, creating a distorsion effect from the movemente of people and objects throughout time. It's what Brazilian researcher Arlindo Machado calls 'Chronotopic Anamorphosis'.

The program still has some memory issues, causing some bugs in the image, specially when the image display is combined with video recording. We're working on this issue, but, meanwhile, it's still fun.

We'll soon make available a link to the code. For now, it can be accessed directly from Processing's forum.

marginalia 1.0 BETA - first test

Marginalia 1.0 BETA from Marginalia Project on Vimeo.

The first effective version of Project Marginalia was completed with the test of the audiovisual installation Marginalia 1.0 BETA, on 5th July 2008 in a residence in the city of Córdoba, Argentina [where André Mintz lives temporarily]. The system worked well, as expected, in spite of delaying response to gestures made by the spectators, which was caused primarily by the system's unsatisfactory processing time and limitations of java code to real-time video response.

Developed by Project Marginalia's team on Processing environment, the software GestureMapping [version 1.1.1] was used to create an installation in which the spectator is able to define the area in which a projection occurs by directing the light of a torch to specific areas of the screen. A camcorder captures this intervention and communicates with a computer that interprets received data. The software then recognizes the illuminated area and uses this mapping to generate the final image that is projected by a multimedia projector over the screen.

A group of spectators – composed of other residents of the building – got surprised and satisfied with the achieved results, reacting to the installation in various ways. The majority used the system to explore the projected image itself, using the torch light to reveal what was hidden by the darkness of when they entered the room, while others enjoyed the possibility of drawing diverse shapes and theirs names with the torch light.

For more information on this project, please check the previous posts marked marginalia 1.0; to know the history of its development explore the whole blog.

marginalia 1.0 BETA - the footage which was used

Marginalia 1.0 BETA - video image used in the test from Marginalia Project on Vimeo.

On the first test of project Marginalia 1.0 BETA, which took place in Córdoba, Angentina, the spectators illuminated portions of a screen with a torch to reveal a hidden video [available for streaming above]. Despite the simplicity of the image, it was chosen for some reasons, which are going to be presented further on this post, as part of the process of creating the installation.

The main reason for using this video to test the project was the existence of a text in the image, which the authors judged as one of the simplest and most effective ways of guaranteeing the interest of the spectators on exploring the image. As predicted, once the spectators noticed the existence of the text reading it became their main motivation on exploring the installation, turning it into some sort of mission on their experience of the work.

An interesting idea for the concept of the work was provided by the content of the text. The phrase that can be read on the wall, written in spanish and of unknown authorship, states: “There are known and unknown things and in between there are doors”. Opening doors, action for which this graffiti apparently stands for, is analogous to some ideas that nurture our project, asking for the spectator to interact actively with the work to see the images in exhibition. If the spectator does not engage to what is expected of him, the images may not be seen and, therefore, will not be apprehended.

“68/08”, the date that is inscribed in the graffiti, indicates the forty years that have passed since the events of 1968 took place on diverse countries and defines an horizon for interpretation of the text linked to the ideals of that moment [cultural contestation of academic, religious, moral and political values of a generation], orienting the ask for participation to a wider plane of questioning beyond the purposes of the exhibition itself.

The choice of recording a fixed and static plane is due to some reasons as well. It was necessary to guarantee that the spectator could orient himself visually, as the apprehension of the image would be restricted to small visible portions, and that he could organize the exploration of the image seeking what remained unknown to him. A secondary reason for this choice to be made was guaranteeing that the video file remained small in size, facilitating its processing by the software GestureMapping. We have also chosen this format in order to prevent much movement on the image, creating an atmosphere in which the spectator, while reading the text, could be surprised by a person walking in front of the wall, configuring a rupture with his primary idea that the image was completely static.

While testing the installation, however, the image presented some issues that will undergo further studies and analyzes for the making of a new version. The main problem that could be perceived was the high contrast between the wall on the left [light] and the background on the right side of the image [dark], which caused the spectators to think there was no image on the darker side of the video, identifying the limit suggested by the wall as the limit of the video itself. The movement of people walking in front of the wall revealed to be uninteresting due to speed issues, and in most cases was not perceived by the spectators.

Henceforth, it is necessary to explore better ways of dealing with the interest of the spectators for the image and what concepts it should present to the viewer, with particular interest on what we intend to present with this work that goes beyond its interactive, formal and aesthetic proposals. Among the diverse aspects of the project, its conceptualization and physical disposition are still to be explored in details, configuring the main preoccupations of further instances of development of the project.

marginalia 1.0 BETA - GestureMapping software / source code

Soon the software GestureMapping and its source code will be available for download here.

marginalia 1.0 BETA - GestureMapping software

The software GestureMapping [version 1.1.1], developed in Processing environment by Project Marginalia's team, is responsible for interpreting data for creating a projection on the space of the installation planned for the project.

The visual/experiential interface of the installation consists, superficially, of a projection over which the spectator is able to interfere by using illumination devices; and torches which will be supplied on the installation to be used with this intention. The software, then, interprets each frame of the video defining the elements of the array based on the brightness of each pixel according to a predefined threshold value. The result of this comparison between the brightness of the pixel and the threshold value [greater, lesser or equal] determines which mathematical function is to be used to modify the values of the correspondent element of the array. If the brightness of the pixel is greater than or equal to the threshold value [if the spectator illuminates this area], the value of the correspondent element of the array increases; following this logic, if the value is lesser than the threshold value, the value of the correspondent element of the array decreases [multiplied by a factor which has a lower value if compared to that of the first expression].

This procedure is repeated for each pixel of the image. Once every pixel is analyzed, the values stored in the array are transposed to the pixels of the image that will be merged with the video loop, in order to determine the brightness of each of this pixels in a scale that ranges from 0 [black] to 255 [white]. Once completed, the procedure is initialized again for the next frame of the captured video, maintaining the values which were stored on the array during the analyzes of the frame which will be employed on the operations of the next frame. By transposing the values stored in the array to the pixels of the image following these premisses, a trail is produced and gradually fades – according to the incidence of light on specific portions of the image.

Simplified scheme on the working of the software

The image which was produced based on the data stored in the array is, then, merged – using multiply – with a hidden video loop. This image serves as a mask that defines visible and invisible areas of the video. – initially graduated as a musician to then diversify his fields of interest in music, movies, video and television – was one of the firsts to deeply explore the video technology as expressive possibility, opening different pathways in this area and creating important zones for reflexion about the electronic image and its potentials.

For many years a member of Fluxus group, of George Maciunas, his performances, installations and ready-mades explored multidisciplinary fields from a provocative approach, deconstructing traditional elements of areas like music and innovating in the critical [or not so critical] use of yet incipient technologies, such like video and television.

Among his works, we could highlight the approximation between video and music, and, in particular, the

approximation of the piano and the TV set – both, in their own historical moment, the most expensive pieces of furniture found in a bourgeois home. These two devices were then targets of various interventions of the artist, that sought to produce new sound and visual effects through prepared pianos and TV sets - as he exhibited in one of his first great exhibitions: “Exposition of Music – Eletronic Television”, set up at the residence of the architect Rolf Jährling in 1963.

In this exposition, Paik presented works of fundamental interest to Marginalia Project, one of them named “Random Access Music”, in which sound devices (record players and tape recorders) had their reading units detached and offered to the manipulation of the visitors, that could use them to access parts of the recorded sound in the records and tapes in a random and unlinear way - producing themselves their own music by combining the sounds available.

Random Access Music - Nam June Paik

Somewhat through this approximation, many of Paik’s projects were made in an analogy of the simultaneity of sound production of musical instruments with a moving image context. This was one of the premises in his presentation of the Paik/Abe Synthesizer, that he developed together with the TV technician Shuya Abe. According to him, the video synthesizer they created should be manipulated in real-time, like a piano, to produce various plastic effects in the electronic image.

From this experiment forth, many of Paik’s experiments dealt with real-time image production, and, some of them, with closed circuit video systems that fed back themselves, creating a variety of trail and superposition effects. In this array of experiments, the live television show “Good Morning Mr. Orwell” really shows out. Done in the beginning of 1984, it was accomplished in live broadcasting from New York and Paris. In one of the sections of the show, a couple danced before a blue screen and, through chroma keying, the background was replaced by the feedback of the signal sent to Paris and then back to New York, creating the trail effect through the delay produced by the physical distance between the two cities. And that too was combined with numerous image and sound superposition of signals coming from different points of the globe, effectively accomplishing a work made in no specific geographical place.

Good Morning, Mr. Orwell - Nam June Paik

Paik’s approach to technology was frequently ambiguous, given the analogy he continuously proposed between technology and elements of eastern culture, such as Zen Buddhism – in association with musician John Cage. The images he sees: a series of references to historical images of a first cinema, along which a recreation of the Arrival of the train to the station, of Lumière brothers. In an explicit reference to the history of cinema, Godard emphasizes the counterpart of this invention [to cite Jean-Louis Commoli]: the spectator. Throughout the screening, the protagonist reacts directly to the images shown based on his naïve belief in the cinematographic device – already assimilated by the more experienced spectators.

He covers his face to the arrival of the train [as it is said to have happened in the Lumière screening]; tries to see the woman that undresses herself beyond the border of the screen by changing his position in the movie theater; when the bath scene comes, he jumps off from his seat and gets closer to the screen. Firstly he tries to see inside the bath tub to then start to touch and caress the image of the woman - her face, her legs – seeming start to understand the nature of the image. But then, trying to actually enter the image, he tears down the projection screen.

Marginalia Project seeks to explore this precise aspect of the relation between spectator and image, but through the construction of a specific device in which this desire of the spectator in relation to the image is incorporated to the projection itself. Beyond an illusion of virtual reality, the experiment proposed by the project centralizes the materiality of the image, that shall not be forgotten nor ignored by the spectator, but actually emphasized in a new form of interaction.

marginalia 0.2 - image experiences

Paik for Kids from André Mintz on Vimeo.

In the video Paik for Kids – made by André Mintz out of family archive – the electronic image theme is developed from the point of view of the spectator, in the figure of a child being presented by her dad to a TV set that displays the image of the child herself captured by the camera in real-time.

It’s not a direct antecessor of Marginalia Project, but a conceptual antecessor, that shows already the problematic with which the project relates to. The relation between body and image - between one’s self and its representation - in a gaze that seeks by the naivety the revelation of intrinsic characteristics of the materiality of the image. In a moment in which the video image – with its specific characteristics, such as its accessibility to a larger amateur public and its simultaneity – was also in its childhood, with the first explorations of its potentials.

By placing the camera framing the image itself produces, the system feeds back itself, multiplying the image it captures ad infinitum, like two mirrors facing each other. It’s a basic procedure of video – that was impossible in traditional cinema -, used in many works in this field, and that will also be used in marginalia. However, such procedure is quite different from the mirrors, since the body of the spectator is detached from the image formation, allowing her only to perceive it – as her movement does not make it possible to see anything beyond what the camera sees. The playing of getting into and out of the frame reveals the fragmentation produced by the camera, just as the similarities and distinctions between the body of the spectator and represented body – between the subjective point of view and the view of the self made objective.

Marginalia Project seeks an experience close to this childish one: an exploratory will without a predetermined objective beyond the knowledge offered by the process; in process. The idea as a product of experience; of the direct contact with the materiality from which it elaborates its own form and detonates new processes.

marginalia 0.1 - appropriations

Picasso - Gjon Mili

The long exposure with flashlight lighting is not a rare technique, being easily found photographic experiments in internet that make use of it, generally referred to as light painting or light scribbling (Flickr). However, there’s little systematic exploration of its aesthetics possibilities – beyond its basic forms – and little seeking for expanding, from its base, to a problematic it creates in photography field.

Even in the history of photography, there were only a few photographers that gave it a deeper approach, in such a way that there aren’t many photo icons of this technique. Possibly the most important and most known image is the portrait Gjon Mili made of Picasso in 1949, illustration of this post. This experiment clearly accomplishes, by the drawing made by the painter with the flashlight, a hybridism between the objective photographic record and the gesture trace of the drawing, but without going too far of the indexical aspect of photography through post-production. The flash, then, registers an instant of Picasso’s figure that coexists in the photogram with the image produced by his drawing process - way beyond the short instant. The gesture is inserted and one only photographic record is cohabitated by different temporalities.

Camera movement on flashlight - Harry Callahan

A little earlier, but still contemporaneous to Mili’s photo, Harry Callahan also worked with long exposition processes and, more frequently, of multiple exposure.

Nude - Evgen Bavcar

A similar case, the photographer Evgen Bavcar also uses this technique, but producing a different aesthetic. The long exposure makes Bavcar’s photos somewhat surrealistic and, for the visual deficiency of the photographer – blind since he was 12 -, it is quite often qualified as tactile, mixing the sight and the touch in the constitution of the image. In this case also, the gesture is incorporated beyond the pressing of the camera’s button and the photographic instant is distended and opened wide to the intervention of the photographer to the process itself.

marginalia 0.1 - photographic experiments

orage dans une tasse de thé - pedro veneroso

The first and main antecessor of Marginalia Project are the photos of one of its authors, Pedro Veneroso, produced with long an multiple exposure techniques.

The aesthetic accomplished by this technique – particularly known as light painting or light scribbling – guided some of the works developed individually and collectively by the authors and is currently the base for the development of Marginalia Project.

Basically, the photos are made with a long exposition interval in a dark environment, generally using a flashlight as lighting source. The use of multiple exposure also allows the superposition of distinct moments on the same photogram, with a change of set or of the position of the props, the camera or the photographer.
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;
